NIAGARA MATCH ENDS IN WIN
The Sledgehammers faced off in their first match of the season against friendly rivals, Niagara University this past Saturday. The game got off to a shaky start technique-wise, as the team struggled to keep possession of the ball. In the first minutes of the game, tries scored by the Hammers were quickly responded to with follow-up tries by Niagara. About 20 minutes in, both teams were shaken when a Niagara player received an injury that required spine isolation and transport off the field. Finishing out the first half, the Sledgehammers ended the first 40 minutes only a few points ahead of the opposition. In the second half however, the team secured a hefty point differential, finishing the game with a 41-19 win. Tries were scored by Emily Grey and Krysten Johnston (two each), as well as Ellie Sachse, Celine Talley, and Becca Silver (one each). These were Johnston's first tries ever! Top tacklers of the game were Becca Silver, Celine Talley, Alexa Annotti, Tor Breza, Jen Foster, and Nina Stash (go rookie!). Many of our rookies also got a chance to take the field and get in on the action. Several played their first games ever, and all contributed significantly to the game! We look forward to watching them grow as players throughout the duration of the season! The team is preparing for their next game this Saturday against Canisius College.
